How Gematria Calculation Works

Gematria Value = Σ(Numeric Value of Each Letter)

Every letter in the alphabet is assigned a fixed numeric value. To find a word or phrase's gematria value, look up each letter's value and add them together. Spaces, punctuation, and (for Hebrew and Greek) vowel marks are skipped — they carry no numeric value of their own.

Worked Example — שלום (Shalom)

  • ש (shin) = 300
  • ל (lamed) = 30
  • ו (vav) = 6
  • ם (final mem) = 40
  • Sum: 300 + 30 + 6 + 40 = 376

Simple English gematria assigns A=1 through Z=26 in alphabetical order. Greek isopsephy follows the same additive-value pattern as Hebrew, including three archaic letters that fill numeral gaps.

Common Mistakes & Edge Cases

  • Treating "gematria" as one single numberHebrew, English, and Greek gematria are separate letter-value systems, and even within English there are several ciphers (Ordinal, Reverse Ordinal, Full Reduction). The same word produces a different total in each — quoting "the gematria value" without naming the system and cipher is meaningless.
  • Using base letter values for Hebrew final (sofit) lettersIn the standard system (Mispar Hechrachi), a final letter like ך (kaf sofit) shares its base letter's value (20, same as כ). Only the Mispar Gadol ("great value") method assigns final letters their own extended values (500, 600, 700, 800, 900) — mixing the two conventions produces an inconsistent total.
  • Vowel points and diacritics carry no gematria valueHebrew niqqud (vowel points) and Greek accent marks are pronunciation guides, not letters — they contribute nothing to a gematria or isopsephy total and are skipped automatically. Two spellings of the same word that differ only in vowel points or accents will still produce the same value.
  • Expecting a "matching words" databaseThis calculator computes the numeric value of whatever you type — it doesn't search a dictionary for other words or names that share that value. Finding equivalences means calculating a second word yourself and comparing the two totals.
